A short guide to purchasing a used motorcycle

Automotive
Motorbikes can be an expensive purchase, and whether you're planning on treating yourself to a newer model or buying your very first motorcycle, used options can be a good way to save some money - but what do you need to look out for?

While buying used motorcycles can be a useful way of cutting down the cost of your purchase, you will need to take a few more things into consideration than when buying a brand new model. After all, you will want to make sure there are no problems or damage before making your purchase.

Plus, you must decide whether you want to purchase from a dealer or a private seller. On the whole, dealers will provide warranties that can protect you should anything go wrong after you take the bike home, while private sellers can generally offer lower prices.

Of course, the most crucial part of buying a used motorbike is when you go to see it and take it for a test drive. This is when you will be able to compare its features and condition to how it was advertised - and look for any hidden problems.

Therefore, it is vital to take the time to check it over carefully. To do so, you will need to know what you are looking at and what you are looking for - if you think you do not have enough experience to be able to spot potential problems, don't be afraid to bring along a friend or hired expert who can.

There are numerous things you should keep an eye out for, and just a few of these are any dents or scratches in the bodywork, the condition of the frame and tyres, signs of rust or corrosion - particularly in the fuel tank - and whether all the electrics work.

Just scratching the surface, this list is by no means exhaustive - so you can see how much there is to check for. For this reason, it is essential to look at the bike in the daylight and to equip yourself with a torch. If you don't, you may miss problems you would have otherwise spotted.

During the test drives, make sure you try out all the gears and pay attention to how the vehicle brakes. Of course, while you do so, ensure you wear all the appropriate gear, such as a helmet and protective clothing like Dainese leathers.

While actually seeing the vehicle and test driving may seem like the key points to buying a used motorbike, there is in fact more to successfully purchasing a good bike than this.

For example, you should do plenty of research on the type of bike you want, how much it is typically selling for at the moment and any quirks it may have before you book any viewings.

This way, you can make sure that the models you look at are fair in terms of pricing and their condition. Plus, it's a good idea to work out how much insurance you will need to pay when buying the model you're after - this will quickly help you to ascertain whether you're desired bike is actually within your budget.

Once you've chosen your new motorbike, you might want to consider getting some new gear - like gloves, boots and leathers from Dainese - before heading for the open road.

If you're planning on buying used motorbikes, make sure you pick up all the accessories you need at P&H Motorcycles.

We sell a great range of Dainese clothing, including Dainese leathers, so browse our site today.
