It’s a simple thing – a rod holder. But it can make a huge difference on a fishing trip. Whether you have a small inshore boat for freshwater fishing or a big offshore boat for saltwater fishing, properly placed rod holders can help make your fishing trip successful. Rod holders, of course, are fixtures to hold your fishing rods when you are not using them. For center console fishing boats, you usually find pocket design ones on either side of the center console. For really small boats, they usually are of bracket design and are on either side of the boat along the walls. On a big fishing boat, they’re usually placed up high above the helm. The most important point is that you want to keep the rods you’re not using out of the way while you are fishing. Now, a novice might ask why you would have more than one rod with which to fish. An experienced angler knows that no matter how careful you are, something unexpected can happen. You could accidentally step on your road and, crack; your day would be done. You could catch on a snag and lose half your line. You could sit your rod down for a second and suddenly see it go flying off the boat (with a fish on the end of the line). No matter what happens, you just don’t want to get caught empty handed when the big ones are biting. So you’ll always have one rod that you’re not using. But then add a fishing buddy or two and your fishing boat will need lots of rod holders to avoid chaos. As far as the type of rod holder, there are many different kinds – from the aforementioned brackets to the pocket style with notches for the reel to slide into. There also are the fancy ones that tilt down while the boat is moving and can tilt up when you anchor. For the big water, you’ll want some made out of stainless steel or chrome. Nylon, fiberglass or ABS plastic is fine for lighter duty fishing in calmer water. As fishing boat design has evolved, manufacturers know include various options for rod holders. So when you’re looking at a new fishing boat, if you don’t like the rod holders the way they are, you probably can get them changed. Florida-based EdgeWater Power Boats makes a premier fishing boat that has lots of options for rod holders and other features. It also makes boats for cruising, diving and skiing.
