David Coombes, FCILT, is the man behind LogisticsJobShop.co.uk – the new online logistics recruitment job board. Here he explains why the future of logistics recruitment is all about being online. “I’ve been involved with the logistics industry and logistics recruitment for over 25 years but have never seen the recruitment process for logistics jobs and supply chain jobs change as much as it has done recently. “Let’s start with some facts. Between 2000-2010 there was a 43% growth in the number of job boards worldwide and the quantity is growing all the time. Over 25% of recruitment in the UK is now the result of an online orientated process, and online recruitment is expected to overtake offline by the end of 2012. “Nearly all of the large 3PLs are using job boards of some kind to find new candidates for logistics jobs and supply chain jobs including freight jobs, warehouse jobs, distribution jobs and driving jobs. The clients I speak to on a near-daily basis all confirm that their logistics job and supply chain job recruitment models have changed. Because of tough economic conditions they have much less time and resource available, and so using online channels makes that first step of advertising a logistics job or supply chain job and short-listing candidates happen more easily and quickly. Today’s candidates are also much more internet focused and are using social networking sites such as LinkedIn and Twitter to put themselves directly in front of recruiters for freight jobs, warehouse jobs, distribution jobs and driving jobs. “According to Skills for Logistics, the logistics sector employs 1.6 million people across almost 195,000 companies UK-wide, which equates to a good chunk of the country’s workforce. In our sector, where the majority of jobs are filled by traditional blue collar workers and the churn rate is higher than average, online recruitment for logistics jobs and supply chain jobs is both cost- and time-effective for recruiters, and offers more choice for candidates. “Logistics has been identified as a key growth area in the UK and while the past three years in particular have been tough, the online logistics recruitment model in the sector is thriving. There might be fewer jobs but there is a huge talent pool out there. For employers wanting to find the right candidate it should be a recruitment paradise, whether you are recruiting for a single logistics job or supply chain job or 100. “So what’s next in this fast-moving world? Well with the increase in user-friendliness of smart phones it’s a good bet that the online logistics recruitment offer will be enhanced for mobile devices – m-marketing, apps… the list is growing.
