Nutrition: "Bad" Vs. Good Food?

Health,Family & Parenting,Fitness
Nutrition is a topic within the Physical Education subject which we take as kids very early in school. Did you notice how very few cared even to listen to what our teachers were saying? Since childhood, nutrition is something that kids has very little interest of. If ever, it was not nutritional education that attracted our attention. It was the prospect of eating food that appealed to our taste, nothing that concerned about its effects on our bodies. We were only concerned about the fun and enjoyment of food just like everything else that we love to have and do. Little did we know that food and nutrition will largely dictate our physical, mental and psychological condition as grown-ups.

Even if we paid some attention to the Nutrition subjects/topics in school, it would not have been enough as we really have to focus on everything we take in through our taste-discriminate mouths. As nutrition and dietetics professionals say, no two bodies are equal. In order to stay really fit, we each have to develop our very own unique dietary or nutritional regimen to match our equally unique lifestyle. Some people need more carbs than others. It would be wise to consult dietetics and nutrition professionals and specialists especially if there already is discomfort or an ailment associated with improper diet and nutrition. They can design the nutrition program that suits our very lifestyle and stay fit for the rest of our lives.

Reading through dietetics and nutrition materials available in books, magazines and from food and nutrition websites, there are a lot of myths that mislead ordinary folks into unhealthy diets and lifestyles. The proper balance of food intake from the three food groups that fuel our bodies, that is, carbohydrates (energy foods such as corn, rice, wheat, fats or lipids, etc.), protein (body-building foods such as meat, poultry, seafood, soy, etc.) and vitamins and minerals (protective or regulating foods such as fruits, vegetables and dairy products) should match our lifestyle, that is, the manner by which we use the nutrients we get from the food we eat through physical and mental activities and exercises.

There is also a psychological slant to food and nutrition. People tend to view proper nutrition in the belief that there are “bad” foods that must be avoided. As leading nutrition professionals emphasise, there are no “bad” foods. There is only good, better and best.

“Bad” foods are most likely favourite foods. The “bad” food, as it is not bad at all, can be eaten without that psychological trap commonly called “food guilt” if taken in proper proportions in a balanced diet according to its fit in one’s lifestyle. Having freed ourselves from food guilt, we can get to eat the “bad” food “without strings attached” and really enjoy it.

Enjoy your meals while staying healthy! ?
