This is the plan: no matter the time it might take, I will manage to get to Australia without having to fly, with my feet stuck onto the ground. It might sounds like I have some kind of phobia of high altitude but this, believe it or not, is not my problem. It’s just a matter of trying to achieve something different, memorable, unforgettable. Not that long ago I was reading something about this new experience that a quite original travel agency is offering to those brave people who also have some money on the side (at least £4,000) and some spare time to dedicate to an amazing trip. It consists of getting to Australia by all means but airplanes and all other kinds of means that require your feet to be above the ground. The idea behind this is the necessity to offer a new kind of experience to those who want to discover new sensations and consider themselves real travellers. The agency oz-bus.com offers routes such as the London – Sydney, which go through the Middle East, India and Thailand, and the London – New York City route that goes across the cold Siberia and Alaska. This way of travelling aims at offering bag packers the opportunity to see the world and choose to stop anywhere along the route, according to the travellers' desire. This means that a trip to Australia can last, theoretically, between 2 months and several years, as it’s all up to the traveller. The quite new concept of travelling, called ‘Slow Travelling’, goes against the trend of the last decades, which has seen a faster and more immediate way of travelling, based on an ‘A to B route’ that has the limitation of showing only specific points in the world, without offering the opportunity to have a broader picture of the world, with all the inner bits and not so popular spots. Unfortunately, I can’t afford yet to take so many days (or years) off in order to go around the world, forgetting my routine, my job, my home with all the useless things that decorate it. A point I feel like to make is: I don’t necessarily need to pay an agency to be told how to circumnavigate the world as I could simply do it on my own, and change my route according to my desire, my instinct or any other factor. For the time being, the only thing I can afford is to go with my caravan to Wales and get some rest, reflecting more on the concept of ‘Slow Travelling’. Surely, ‘Slow Travelling’ can be applied to any kind of journey, be it a trip around the world or simply a little break in the countryside. The idea is: it’s not important where you are heading to, but how you get there. The destination becomes less important than the actual travel. When I was young I did not care about where I was going but how I was getting there. I still feel the same now.
