What are the advantages of using EMR or Electronic Medical Record compared to the use of paper-based medical records? What is EMR? An EMR or Electronic Medical Record is a technology developed and introduced for use of medical institutions, particularly for hospitals, which aim to reduce the time it takes for healthcare personnel to store, retrieve, and modify a medical record. Because of those functionalities, EMR systems had been known to eliminate a number of medical errors which are caused by use of paper-based records. Advantage of EMR Systems from Paper-Based Records One advantage that made EMR Systems popular, particularly for larger healthcare institutions, is that it cuts the cost paid by these institutions for storage facilities. Paper-based medical records are usually stored in storage facilities, usually within the institution’s premises. However, larger medical institutions would usually require more than one storage facility to store all their medical records. According to experts, ehr software is usually stored for 7 years. This is the reason why most of these would have to rent or lease a storage space outside their premises, which is more expensive. The use of an EMR system, such as a pediatric emr, had significantly reduced the cost of renting storage spaces to store all their medical records. This is due to the fact that electronic medical records can be easily stored in a digital storage space, such as a Hard Disk Drive, which can also be stored within the institution’s premises. In addition to that, another major factor that made EMR systems, particularly pediatric EMR software, important is because it had significantly reduced the incidence of medical errors usually associated with the use of paper-based medical records. Handwritten paper medical records can be associated with poor legibility, which can contribute to medical errors. Electronic records help with the standardization of forms, terminology and abbreviations, and data input. Digitization of forms facilitates the collection of data for epidemiology and clinical studies. Other Important Benefits of EMR Systems Another popular reason why EMR systems became an integral part in medical practice is that it can offer healthcare personnel with decision support. Fast access to medical literature and current best practices in medicine are hypothesized to enable proliferation of ongoing improvements in healthcare efficacy. Another important benefit of using EMR systems is that it can be easily shared between different healthcare institutions. Unlike the use of paper-based records, which needed to be transported through courier, electronic medical records can be easily transmitted through the Internet, which is much faster and lesser expensive.
