How Your Eyes are Affected by Exhaustion

Health

Fatigue creates an environment where you are cranky, irritable, and tired - your eyes are also tired. Exhaustion affects your eye sight but to what extent? Learn how being tired can harm your eyes and ways to prevent damage.

You’re tired, cranky, and probably ready for bed! Exhaustion may have hit you hard but you are not quite ready to give in just yet. Sound familiar? Exhaustion has a huge affect on your entire body and when you’re beyond tired, you know it. Most of us have no idea that exhaustion can also wreak havoc on our eye sight! We want our eyes to perform our best but when we’re tired to the point of being exhausted, something’s gotta give!

There are cases where being tired is not just a physical problem for your body but it creates something known as eye fatigue - which is an eye condition where someone suffers from eye weakness, irritation, and poor visual acuity. There are other symptoms associated with eye fatigue as well. Symptoms like glare and poor depth perception are signs that your eyes are tired. If you’re watching TV or playing on the computer when these happen, it’s time to shut off your electrical device and take a rest because your eyes have become tired and your vision may be too blurry for you to function properly.

Refractive errors in vision like long-sightedness, astigmatism, far-sightedness, and others are easily treatable during the day but when you’re tired and your eyes get tired, you may notice your vision going blurry. Appliances like air conditioners and heaters may make it worse because they dry out the air and make your eyes dry and sore. When coupled with exhaustion, it’s a recipe for disaster. The images your eyes see lose their crispness and clarity and become blurry. If this happens, even if you’re at work, take a break away from the heat or cold and take a walk.

Do not drive. If your eyes are tired, blurry, itchy, or feel dry, there’s a good chance you’re experiencing eye fatigue and driving is the most dangerous task you could perform. Statistically, 90 percent of the information you need to drive comes from your eyes and a high percentage of car accidents are caused by driver fatigue linked to tired eyes. The minute our eyes are not operating at 100 percent, our ability to drive cautiously and safely is severely hindered.

If you’re driving and you start feeling tired, there’s no excuse for continuing to drive. Dozing off or resting your eyes while you’re in the driver’s seat is simply unacceptable behavior while driving. When your eyes start to feel heavy and tired, pull off to the side of the road, into a gas station, or into a rest stop. Once you’re safely away from other cars, you can give your eyes a rest until you feel rejuvenated. If you’re eyes feel tired as you’re about to set out on the road, take a few minutes to do some jumping jacks, pushups, or lunges to get the heart pumping and the blood flowing. While coffee is no alternative for sleep, we all know what it’s like to wake up and still feel tired. About a half hour before embarking on your journey, drink a cup of coffee or two, just make sure it’s not decaf.

If you’re a fan of wearing contact lenses, try switching to prescription eyeglass frames when you’re tired. If you haven’t bought a pair of glasses recently, go look for eye glasses online - they may get to you more quickly than glasses bought off line. Switching to eyeglasses can help relieve some of the irritation caused by eye fatigue and exhaustion but nothing works better than a good night’s sleep.

Hillary Glaser is a social networking specialist and expert in cross-media promotion, currently working on promoting prescription eyeglasses. She is the Director of Marketing and Special Projects for GlassesUSA.com - the easiest way to buy glasses online, which now offers free shipping on all U.S. orders with the code FreeShip10.
