At the age of 90, Robert Morgenthau left the office as Manhattan’s District Attorney and joins the Law firm of Wachtell Lipton Cy Vance Jr. now sits as the new DA. Morgenthau has served 34 years as the New York’s top prosecutor and personally handpicked Cyrus Vance Jr. to replace him. He said that he admired the Law firm and has several acquaintances there. The firm concentrates on business mergers and acquisitions unlike the DA’s office which is often dealing with celebrity misbehavior and corporate corruption. Morgenthau started his career as a prosecutor way back 1961 when the President at that time, John F. Kennedy appointed him as the US Attorney. Cy Vance Jr. on the other hand, was a former litigator and defense lawyer. On January 2010, Cyrus R. Vance Jr. has pledged to use the immense power of a prosecutor with humility. Having a political family background, he was very familiar with the life of a politician or prosecutor. His father served as the Secretary of State during the administration of Jimmy Carter. He was a New York Native and returned here in 2004 where he worked in a reform panel of the state sentence. Morgenthau has stated his plan before he resigned to work on Wachtell Lipton Cy Vance Jr. was endorsed by him. He was quoted saying that Cy Vance Jr. is “the best qualified, by his experience and his views.” He also gained the endorsement of Carolyn Kennedy and three major newspapers in New York City. The race for the most prestigious prosecutors’ job is really a tremendous one. The three candidates are Leslie Crocker Snyder, Richard Aborn and Cy Vance Jr. of course. Leslie Crocker Snyder has an odd history regarding Morgenthau as she tried to oust him in 2005 saying that he was past his prime, in the end it gained her his lasting hostility. As expected, Cy Vance Jr. won. Morgenthau is currently working as a counsel and held a non-partner position at Wachtell Lipton Cy Vance Jr. now as Manhattan’s District Attorney. Despite of his age, Morgenthau has proven to be very active during his tenure as the DA, and he trust Cy Vance that he will continue his legacy that is why he has chosen him.
