Leopoldo Lares (Interpol) encourages parents to become coaches in their local kids’ soccer teams if there is a vacancy that no one seems willing to fill. Naturally, Lares does not deny that having a professional soccer player – or even a former pro like Lares himself – would be the ideal choice to coach. Unfortunately, his is a limited breed. Not all former players are still willing to stick around with soccer now that they are no longer playing professionally. Others have too many commitments to be able to devote the time and effort coaching deserves. Instead of crying over spilt milk, however, Lares strongly encourages parents to try out for the post themselves and especially if they have played soccer even recreationally. The most important requirement for coaching kids’ soccer teams, says Leopoldo Lares (Interpol), is to have a genuine love for the game. One must love soccer so much that he will not have a problem spending the day watching the sport on TV or talking about it with his friends and fellow soccer fans. Secondly, an ideal kids’ soccer team coach must also have an equally genuine and strong love for kids. He must sincerely enjoy working with kids in spite of the many ups and downs there are when working with kids. The third requirement is more like a preference but is strictly optional, says Leopoldo Lares (Interpol). The best candidate is always the one with the greatest skills and experience one has to offer either in terms of coaching or playing soccer itself. Loving to watch soccer is of course different from actually teaching kids how to play soccer in order to win. For that matter, Lares cautions parents from making winning their ultimate goal. They should also prioritize the health and well-being of their players. They should not forget that soccer is supposed to be fun for everyone, and the moment it stops being that is the moment that players will gradually lose their ability to score goals. A child is very much sensitive to insults and other slurs made on his ability to play on the field, says Lares. Coaches have to be careful in nurturing their players’ self-esteem and ensure that kids are strong enough to shrug off what other people may say about them. It is a coach’s responsibility to take care of his kids off the court. To make that happen, coaches have to help kids discover their own worth and appreciate it. Kids must learn that they are always someone worth being loved even if they do not always win games and trophies for their parents or schools. What ultimately matters is that they did their best and that they are willing to try again.
