If you're considering going on a round the world trip, you might want to look at spending a few days in Bangkok - a city that blends the modern and the traditional with panache. There is so much to see and do in this part of the world that it is advisable to plan what you want to see before you actually get there so that you're not overwhelmed by what can be a chaotic city. You are sure to want to experience the more traditional side of this metropolis and the best place to begin in this endeavour is to have a look at some of the many temples to be found here. To start your temple tour, make your way to Wat Arun - the Temple of Dawn. This sits on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River and, as the story goes, received its name after King Taksin - following fighting with a Burmese army - reached the temple as the sun came up. You might also like to visit Wat Phra Kaew - also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. This is the most important temple in Thailand and can be found in the centre of the city. Whichever temple you choose to visit, do so during the morning when the air is a little cooler and these religious buildings are not overcrowded. Temples aside, you might enjoy going to Bann Bat, which is thought to be the last place in Bangkok where the brass bowls used by Buddhist monks on morning alms rounds are handmade. The community here has been making these pieces since the late 18th century. If you're keen to see the more modern side to Bangkok, make sure you have a look at Baiyoke Tower II. This is the tallest building in Thailand and has 85 floors, stretching 304 metres into the sky. Make your way to the 77th floor, where there is a public observatory deck for some wonderful views of the metropolis. The Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall might also be of interest. This is a particularly impressive palace of white marble that can be found at the end of the Royal Plaza in Dusit and is a good example of neoclassical Renaissance architecture.
