According to recent Local News in the Philippines, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, or DSWD, will be handing out cash or food to victims of recent typhoons who have helped in cleaning up and restoring their villages and their neighborhoods. Cash-for-Work and Food-for-Work The cash-for-work and food-for-work programs by DSWD had used in many calamities since it was first developed and deployed. It was recently applied after Ondoy had hit Metro Manila. It is a program which gives those that was affected by a calamity, such as a typhoon or a flash flood, cash or food payment for their assistance in the clean-up and restoration of their homes, their villages, and their cities. This solves the issue about the lack of manpower which can help in the restoration of a city or a province after a devastating calamity. The advantage of this, particularly for those affected, is that they can gain income which they can use to survive until their homes and livelihood is restored. According to local news in the Philippines, the cash-for-work and food-for-work programs will be applied in regions affected by last two typhoons, including Metro Manila, Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon. Other Assistances of the Government Social Welfare secretary, Corazon Soliman, had also coordinated with the local government, non-government associations, as well as other concerned agencies to help in the proper implementation of recovery and rehabilitation of families that were affected by the recent calamities, particularly for those places which are still submerged in flood water. As an effort to restore the lives of many Filipino families which was destroyed by typhoons “Pedring” and “Quiel”, DSWD had provided a total of P66.67 million worth of relief goods and other forms of assistance, of which more than half of this budget was handed out in Central Luzon, such as Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pampanga and Zambales provinces. As added assistance, according to Philippines News Today, the government’s health insurance agency had extended its deadly for quarterly payments of members under the Individually-Paying Program (IPP) from hard hit regions for one month. The extension is said to apply to members from the Ilocos region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, the Cordillera Administrative Region and Metro Manila, according to PhilHealth president Dr. Rey Aquino.
