Edinburgh's Royal Mile is the ideal setting for a school trip teaching pupils all about Scottish history. Despite its name, this part of the city is actually just over a mile by 107 yards, running down the east side of what was once an active volcano and, later on, a hill fort. You can start your tour at the entrance to the gates of Holyrood Palace and make your way down the different streets that constitute the route - Castlehill, High Street, Lawnmarket, Cannongate and Abbey Strand. You and your students will be able to have fun by exploring Edinburgh Castle, among many other interesting sights along the thoroughfare. The castle in particular should be included on field trip itineraries, as it is not only a historic monument, but is also still in operation today, as it is where the headquarters of the Scottish Division can be found. You might also want to head to St Margaret's Chapel to see the oldest surviving part of the castle. This was built in the 12th century and can still be used to this day by the garrison for wedding ceremonies. Pupils may be interested in seeing the Mercat Cross, which was once used as the central meeting place for citizens and was where royal proclamations and other official announcements took place. To continue the tour, head to Parliament House, which was built in 1641. The Scottish Parliament used this building until the Treaty of Union in 1707, while the Great Fire of 1824 saw many of the surrounding buildings burnt to the ground. Head over to the Signet Library to show your students more of the historical side of Edinburgh. Robert Reid built the exterior between 1809 and 1812, while the exquisite interior was initially designed by William Stark. However, he died in 1813 and the work was completed by William Playfair. All of this history is sure to wear some of your students out and you should allow time for a bit of fun, as well as education. Luckily, the Royal Mile is home to a plethora of shops, many of which are quintessentially Scottish. You will find several kiltmakers' shops - so your pupils could learn about how tartan is made as well as picking up some souvenirs - located here, along with other stores selling a wide range of local goods. Edinburgh is also home to numerous parks and gardens perfect for a spot of relaxation between sightseeing stops. RESOURCE BOX Looking for ideas for school trips in the UK?
