China remains something of a mystery to most people in the west, but that is certain to change as the nation becomes more influential in world affairs and the global economy. That makes it an ideal destination for overseas school trips, as you will be able to give your pupils an early introduction to this most fascinating of cultures. Even if you do nothing more than visit Beijing during your time in China, your students will have the opportunity to see some magnificent attractions and learn lots about the country's long and varied history. No trip to the capital would be complete without a visit to Tiananmen Square and its collection of landmarks that pay tribute to the Communist regime. The vast plaza is where you will find China's parliament building, the Great Hall of the People, together with the Monument to the People's Heroes and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong. Your pupils will also be on a site of genuine historical importance when they tour Tiananmen Square, as it was where Chairman Mao announced the formation of the People's Republic of China in 1949 and the setting for the brutal suppression of a pro-democracy demonstration in 1989. During your China school trip, you will also find plenty of cultural landmarks dating back to the era when the country was ruled by emperors. The most famous of these is the Forbidden City, which was used as the imperial palace by both the Ming and Qing dynasties. A tour of this lavish complex will allow you to see elaborately constructed buildings such as the Hall of Mental Cultivation and Palace of Heavenly Purity, as well as gaining an insight into the opulent lifestyle of the ruling families by taking in the collections of ceramics, bronzes and paintings in the Palace Museum. More clues to the privileged lives of the emperors can be found at the beautiful Summer Palace, which is famed for its magnificent Imperial Garden. The complex was once home to the Jin Dynasty, but was overhauled by the Qianlong Emperor in the 1750s, when buildings including the Cloud Dispelling Hall and Temple of Buddhist Virtue were added. The country's best known tourist attraction is the Great Wall of China and as some of the best preserved sections are those that protect Beijing, you will be able to visit it during your school trip to the capital. This is an ideal setting to take a history lesson, as the Great Wall was constructed over thousands of years and its development was linked to a number of the ruling families and their desire to deter invaders from hostile territories.
