The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is one of the Department of Homeland Security’s largest and most complex components. Their primary mission is to keep terrorists and their weapons out of the United States. As if that task weren't enough, they are also responsible for securing and facilitating trade and travel - which encompasses immigration and the enforcement of our drug laws. Recently, a package from India made it way to the Cincinnati DHL express consignment hub. Though the package was clearly labeled “harmless generic medicine”, CBP officers conducted a thorough inspection. It was discovered that the parcel contained more than 8,000 counterfeit tablets of a drug called Tadalafil. These pills were manufactured by an unlicensed company and were deemed to be unsafe. They were promptly seized and became part of a collection of 1,000 pounds of counterfeit, illegal and dangerous pharmaceuticals which CBP officers have confiscated from January to August of 2011. It is a worrisome statistic that the CBP has thus far this year experienced a full 43% increase in confiscations of shipments of illegal substances at the DHL express consignment hub. Some of the drugs intercepted at this location include Tadalafil, Filagra, Xanax, counterfeit Viagra, Sildenafil and variations of synthetic marijuana - all of which are becoming more and more popular with consumers. David Murphy, CBP Chicago Director of Field Operations, is quoted as saying, “When people order any type of medication or other substance over the internet from an unlicensed company, it may seem like a bargain and a way to save money in such economically hard times but they fail to realize that they can also lose their money, their health, and even their life”. He went on to say "It is one of the jobs of CBP to protect people and legitimate businesses by seizing unsafe and unknown substances. The fact is that nobody knows what is in these items being manufactured by unlicensed companies. The ingredients, strength, dosages and manufacturing processes are an unknown, so in the end, it is really no bargain but rather a potential health risk.” It is our aim to do more than just warn the public about this imposing danger.
