BY:SCOTT LUO/SEPT 30,2011 Plants get benefits from being grazed in a way which is more complex than just recovery time and the nutrients gained from urine, dung and saliva. When a plant is grazed with the ripping motion used by mass grazers, the plant releases sugars and amino acids from its root hairs into the soil. This seems like an illogical response, giving up nutrients after losing energy producing capacity, but there is a method in this madness. The nutrients released into the area around the roots cause an explosion in growth of soil bacteria. Some of these organisms have generation times measured in minutes, so large numbers can build up quickly when food is present. Bacteria are prey creatures of the soil and anytime large numbers of prey are present the predators will soon arrive. This is true with rabbits and coyotes, caribou and wolves, bacteria and nematodes. The nematodes and other micro predators consume the bacteria, which contain more protein than the predators need so the excess nitrogen is excreted as ammonia. This highly available nitrogen is released very close to the plant root where it is available only to the plant that donated the nutrients to start the process. It is quickly taken up by the donor plant. Available nitrogen is usually in short supply in undisturbed grassland soils and is the key to plant growth. This method of supplying it to forage plants developed as grasslands and grazing animals worked out their synergistic relationships over eons of time. If timing of graze periods and recovery periods are correct, based on the growth rate of the forage, our management can mimic the methods nature used to develop grasslands. Proper grazing builds healthy grasslands and improper grazing destroys grasslands. This is one of the more unique ways forage plants are adapted to being grazed because they evolved with grazing animals.
