Although the issue about the dengue outbreak in many provinces in the Philippines had slowly subsided, the government is still in full alert of another dengue outbreak while the rainy season hasn’t yet passed the Philippines. Dengue Prevention Methods While the rainy season is still abroad, the risk of another dengue outbreak is still possible. This is the reason why many groups as well as the government are still pushing to practice several Dengue Prevention methods through awareness. Here are some methods practiced to prevent and minimize cases of dengue. Defogging Still used as a method for dengue prevention, it involves the use of smoke which tends to push out dengue-carrying mosquitoes from one location. However, according to many experts, the use of defogger is not a permanent solution for a dengue outbreak due to the fact that mosquitoes would only transfer to another location. Cleaning One of the many dengue prevention methods that different awareness groups are pushing is cleaning one’s own home and backyard. Because of the rainy season, the formation of stagnant water is common, which are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. If left unchecked, a single pool of water can produce hundreds of dengue-carrying mosquitoes, which is why cleaning is an important part for dengue prevention. Mosquito Repellent The use of different mosquito repellent lotions and solutions had also gained a lot of demand in times of a dengue outbreak. Experts have said that the use of a dengue repellent is a safe way to prevent infection of the dengue virus. However, using branded repellents may become too expensive for some Filipinos. This is why different home-made concoctions were developed as a cheaper alternative to branded repellents. A popular example is a mixture of garlic, oil, and any form of citrus fruits such as lemons as well as kalamansi which can be applied as lotions. Proposed Solutions According to experts, the reason why many Filipinos have died due to dengue is because of the virus’ aggressiveness. Unlike in the past outbreaks in which the incubation period normally takes 3 to 14 days, the dengue virus that struck many Filipinos today have only take 3 to 7 days, which caused many deaths and it is the Philippines News Todays. Filipino scientists have planned to introduce a new form of dengue prevention method which involves the release of genetically mutated male mosquitoes that if it mated with a female, will produce infertile mosquitoes. However, though it may serve as a permanent solution to eliminate dengue outbreaks, a number of Filipino naturalists had prevented this from being implicated due to the lack of necessary report and information of how this can affect the ecosystem.
