As women we all want to look our best, it is important for our self-esteem and self image. The way you look and feel is dramatically affected by what you eat. It makes sense that what goes in your body impacts the outward appearance of your body. To put in more bluntly, if you are eating rubbish, you are going to look and feel rubbish.

If you want to look slimmer and younger, and have higher energy levels, you need to maintain a healthy diet. A healthy diet has been shown to give you more energy, to help with balancing hormones and improving your mood, reduce PMS, assist with fertility and pregnancy symptoms, maintain a steady weight, decrease premature aging and help with the management of menopause symptoms.

Unfortunately there is no miracle food or magic key to losing weight and looking great. Diets which focus on one food group or food item and claim to be the solution to healthy eating are a lie. Healthy eating requires selection from all the food groups, it is not a quick solution but a long term life choice with countless benefits, and isn’t your body worth that effort?

It is important for women to make sure they get enough calcium. Women are much more likely to to develop osteoporosis than men are. Many people think dairy products are the best source of calcium but animal fat can actually contribute to bone diteriate. Women should take care to safe guard against osteoporosis from an early age as it is harder to absorb calcium as you get older. Alternative sources of calcium are beans, broccoli, brussels sprouts and kale. Women also need to avoid eating too much animal based proteins. Protein is very important for a healthy diet but animal protein can lead to a loss in bone density.

Everyone should eat more plant based foods. We are not talking about corn chips or potatoes crisps here, plant based foods should be leafy greens, fruits, whole grains, beans or legumes. These foods should be the focus of your diet but many women neglect this section of the food pyramid. Try to eat fruit and vegetables at every meal and snack.

Women lose a lot of iron during menstruation. It is an essential mineral and it is important to make sure you are getting enough, particularly if you are a vegetarian. Iron sources are red meat, lentils, spinach, almonds, and legumes.

Fats are a necessary part of a women’s diet. Not all fats lead to weight gain and some are vital elements in looking our best. The fats found in foods like avocados, peanuts, almonds, fish, olive oil and olives help us to stay healthy. These fats are important for soft healthy skin, glossy hair and strong nails. Good fats are also important during pregnancy. Healthy fats assist in the development of a baies brain and nervous system.
