If you're something of an eco tourist and want to see lots of wonderful wildlife while on holiday, then the perfect destination for you could well be the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve in Peru. Also known as the Jungle of the Mirrors, this particular Amazonian reserve is home to some amazingly diverse wildlife - and if your ultimate aim while away is to snap a few pictures of some beautiful animals, you should have your camera close at hand at all times, just to make sure you don't miss any photo opportunities as they arise. And there are sure to be lots of chances to take a few choice snaps, since the reserve is home to some 69 reptile, 449 bird, 102 mammal, 58 amphibian, 256 fish and 1,204 plant species. Many of these are in fact endangered and threatened, so you are sure to be able to go back home with a few tales to regale your friends and family with. Imagine if you came across a jaguar, a black alligator and a giant river otter all on one trip away - you would certainly never forget your holiday, that's for sure. Other animals you should keep your eyes open for include the charapa and taricaya aquatic turtles, another endangered species that would be worth writing home about. One of the largest freshwater fish in the world - the paiche - also calls this part of the globe home. You might enjoy visiting the township of Iquitos, which is located not far from the reserve. This began life as a village inhabited by a wild tribe known as the Iquitos, but it is now the main port of Peru in the Amazon. You can continue your eco tour here, as there is a zoological park waiting to be discovered. Here you will find lots of spas and plantlife to explore, with resorts located in some lovely lagoons. Another spot of interest is Belen - known as the Peruvian Venice - and here you can go for a walk down the pier to see some wonderful views of the Amazon River. While there is much to satisfy eco-tourists in this part of the world, if you prefer architecture to animals, you won't be disappointed. Iquitos has a number of great buildings, with the remains of some amazing palaces, Art Nouveau structures and a house designed by Gustav Eiffel. This was made using metal girders that were transported through the jungle by hundreds of men. See the Jungle of Mirrors when you book an Amazon cruise with Fred.Olsen.
