Ultrasonic cleaning is the only way to get complete zero residue cleaning but the way it works is relatively simple. The process requires little human input, the cycle type and length will depend on how ingrained dirt is and the type of dirt that needs to be removed, for example grease can be removed more effectively with a certain cycle. Presets can be put into the machine though and easily selected. Ultrasonic cleaning machines can also be easily integrated into a production line and run the same program each time or be controlled by another control unit. With a fully automated production online no human input is required at all but a regular check of standards may be wanted. Checking cleaning standards may show up problems with a worn out filter but generally filters need to be changed at regular intervals and shouldn’t be left until the point where residue becomes visible. To get a zero residue clean it is vital that water is fresh, filtered and deionized. For near zero residue cleaning though water can be recycled and registered, this isn’t possible with many other cleaning methods and so saves costs and s greener. The process itself involves the water being vibrated by ultrasonic waves, this vibrates the water so it loosens all dirt, grease and residue including particles of metal and plastic left over from milling and other production techniques. It can also be used to remove residue from parts during servicing of equipment including engines and this can prolong the life of parts substantially and allow a company to add value to customers when offering services including servicing and making custom equipment from parts ordered from elsewhere and then cleaned on site. When the water vibrates under ultrasonic waves it not only cleans the surface as with other cleaning processes but it gets into all creases and crevices including pipes and the internal structure of parts, this means it can get to parts can couldn’t be reached by hand and water is even forced into parts that would usually not be guaranteed to be contacted by water due to air becoming trapped. Even the surface of materials has microscopic pits in that usually would hold small bubbles of air but with ultrasonic cleaning that air is forced out and the water forced in by the vibrations from the waves created. Ultrasonic cleaners may be included with several stages for zero residue cleaning including at least one rinsing bath and drying racks. Smaller ultrasonic cleaners though can achieve near zero residue cleaning with a tabletop unit that is similar to the size and shape of a commercial dishwasher. Alternatives to ultrasonic cleaning include using chemicals to dissolve dirt or using detergents: these can damage some materials and leave a residue themselves. Scrubbing is definitely harmful to many precision parts as well; with ultrasonic cleaning the parts will only have dirt and grease removed so that the surface itself is not damaged as only water comes into contact with it and therefore will only remove encrusted dirt and not permanently attached material.
