The Real County Cork

Travel & Tourism,Business

Cork City usually gets all the press, however the real beauty of the area lies in the surrounding area of Ireland’s largest county. The city of Cork is a beautiful place situated on the River Lee. However the real gems and tourist places of worth to visit are in the heartland of the county and there are plenty of Cork deals.

Clonakilty

Clonakilty in the west of the county is home to the famous white and black puddings you may have heard about. The area is a pretty town with plenty to do in and around it and is full of small shops and multicoloured restored buildings.

Clonakilty or Clon as the locals call it is very close to the beach of Inchedoney – a long and very pretty strand that is one of the prettiest strands you will likely see in Ireland. The area is also home to famous revolutionary leader Michael Collins and his birth place is not far from the town. There is even a museum to commemorate the ‘big man’s’ memory and association with the area. The town also has its own model railway village which is worth a visit.

Clonakilty also has a number of arts and crafts in and around the area. Pottery and other handmade items are common to the area and can be picked up in local shops and in markets.

Cobh

Cobh is a very different town to Clonakilty, this town was the final sailing point of the ill fated Titanic and there is an interpretive centre situated beside the sea commemorating and explaining the liners build, passage and demise on its maiden trip.

The White Star Line building and Titanic memorial are also popular places to visit, as is the Lusitania Memorial, which owes its significance to the liner blown up in 1915 by the German’s in the first world war and was partially the cause of America’s intervention in World War 1.

The town is also home to St Colman’s Cathedral, which stands over the area. A visit to this beautiful cathedral is a must for people visiting Cobh. The area is also very close to Fota Wildlife Park, which hosts a number of wonderful animals in a great surrounding area – Fota is a wonderful place for kids and is a full blown wildlife park in Cork’s country side which is very impressive.

Kinsale

Kinsale is Corks foodie paradise and offers a wide selection of wonderful restaurants and food. Sea food is the predominant type of grub sold in the fantastic restaurants found in this seaside town.

The area also has a great selection of pubs and great places to go out for a few drinks. It also offers pretty walks and attractive shops for those passing through.

Charles Fort outside of the town also offers spectacular views of the Irish coast as well as a good look at a British fort from the 17th century and the life that went with it. Desmond Castle is also a great way to see Irish life from a century before that and is a well preserved castle from the 16th century.

The town is less than 20 miles from Cork City and offers pretty views on the way, in and around the area.

Youghal

Youghal in County Cork is another town with a long history and some wonderful attractions. Its most famous resident Walter Raleigh lived at Myrtle Grove and is accredited with bringing the potato to Europe, as well as tobacco.

The Clock Gate tower in the area is also famous for being the remains of a number old building and churches and also also an attractive site. The area is a great place for food and offers a range of attractive and very tasty restaurants as well as being a very pretty town with very friendly locals – a Cork trait.

As is clear to see whether in any of the above towns, all of which are close to Cork, you will see that the county is an attractive and great place to visit for any number of reasons that has a number of great Cork Deals.
