Cork - Ireland's City of Culture

Travel & Tourism,Business

Cork City, Ireland’s second city and the one the locals feel should be its capital. This gives an insight into the Cork spirit – plucky underdogs, with odd accents.

The city itself has a wonderful history and is a great place to visit on a long or short term break. There is plenty of Cork city deals on a visit to the city, though also some wonderful sight and some must see areas.

English Market

The English Market in Cork is a definite visit when on a visit to the Rebel County as it is known. The market was recently attended by The Queen of England, who took well to the local sellers. The market itself sells the freshest of all local produce, from butchers beef from the local Cork fields, to shell fish and other local produce. It also has its own restaurant and coffee shop, where you can dine on some of this wonderfully produced produce and get a real taste of what Irish food is about.

Clonakilty

Clonakilty in the West of Cork is a beautiful village with a large amount of history and also some beautiful shops and streets. The area was home to the Irish revolutionary Michael Collins, who played a huge part in Irish independence in the 1920s.

It is also only a couple of miles from the wonderful beach of Inchedoney. This strand offers beautiful views of the ocean as well as the opportunity to relax in the wonderful spa and resort overlooking the Ocean. This spa can be involved in Cork city deals from time to time so it is worth keeping an eye out, and if not it is still worth just visiting for the scenery and the sea air.

Kinsale

Kinsale is Cork’s foodie paradise. The town is a fishing village and the trawlers can be seen coming in and out with fresh catches for near and further afield. The town has an abundance of restaurants and pubs in its beautiful area and is a wonderful place for those who enjoy either meat from top class local butchers or fish of all sorts from fish mongers.

Cobh, pronounced Cove is another seaside town, not as famous for its food, but more as it is the last landing place of the ill fated Titanic before it left for America. The town pays homage to the giant ship in its historical centre. Here you can see everything from parts of the ship to the stories of people who sat in first to third class on the cruiser. The magnificence and the Irish influence on the ship are clearly seen (It was built in Belfast) and this truly is worth a visit.

Foto Island

Foto Island is also definitely worth a look. This outdoor zoo has all sorts of animals in its large area. Once the grounds of a large estate, the zoo is worth a visit for those who wish to witness giraffes and other animals in a spacious outdoor Irish environment. The original house belonging to the area is also open and still is magnificent and wonderful when visited.

Cork City is also a great place for socialising and a night out. The city itself is packed full of hotels and so makes an ideal place to go for a night out. These are numerous bars and clubs to visit and if you come during the proper time of year many concerts in a number of music venues.

The Marquee

The Marquee in Cork, take place midsummer and is usually attended by big names from around the globe. The marquee itself offers a great venue and the likes of Leonard Cohen, Massive Attack and an eclectic mix of others have played in recent years. This, alongside the wonderful Cork jazz festival has turned the city into a musical hub for all tastes and genres. Cork’s Jazz Festival is world famous and offers a great couple of days of music from some of the best performers in the world.

Cork is a wonderful area, offering the best of all worlds to the lucky few who visit this gem of a city and county.
