It is important that you exercise self-control in your everyday life. Wherever you go, there will be circumstances that will test how firm or strong you are in overcoming your weaknesses and negative attitudes. Self-control allows you to avoid bad habits, take better control of your behaviors and increase your will power. Starting to practice self-control in school, at home and in the community will help you to become a better individual. Here are some important ways on how you can exercise self-control.

Write down your commitments. If you want to overcome a bad habit, writing your commitment is more effective than saying it. You will gain more control of yourself if you really have the strong decision to overcome it. Writing will give you ample time to think and identify the things you want to change. It will give you a sense of direction on what you want to do with your life. Always keep this list so you can check from time to time if you are heading towards your goals.

Identify your weaknesses. In order for you to overcome any negative behavior or habit, you must identify the things that can break your commitment. You should be specific in identifying the factors that can tempt you to break your promises or commitment. Through this, you will become more aware of the things that can tempt you. This will serve as your guide on what things you need to look after to.

Put on your guard always. One way of overcoming something is allowing yourself into a situation wherein you can test your self-control. When you are about to break your commitment, you should remind yourself about the benefits of keeping your promise. You can also say aloud your self promise when you are in that situation. Self assurance, affirmations and visualizations can also help you to remain guarded from temptations. This will remind you on why you have opted to overcome those negative habits.

Do not give up. When you have failed in overcoming your weaknesses, just keep in mind that it takes time to have total self-control over those things. It is important that even in childhood; you are constantly reminded and trained on how important self-control is. Failure is not a sign to give up; rather it is a way to do better. Do not be disappointment if you have failed but rather try to be stronger in order to keep your self promise. Having a positive attitude and strong determination will help you keep your focus. This will help your to achieve more goals in life.
