Information About ElliptiGO - The Seatless Bike

The ElliptiGO, a seatless bike that emulates running, is going to be launched at the outset of 2010 after a long period in development.

Rather than pedals, the ElliptiGO has two platforms where you stand and press to supply the drive on the crank.

Its originator, Bryan Pate, created the idea after losing the ability to run to keep fit through hip and knee injuries. He wanted to keep on training but found the riding position on the conventional bike uncomfortable and didn?t want to be on a gym-style, stationary elliptical fitness machines.

Specification includes Shimano Alfine 8-speed gearing, aluminium frame and carbon fibre cranks. Claimed weight is 37 pounds (slightly below 17kg), and this will retail at US$1,999.

It's not only geared towards runners seeking a 'low-impact' alternative though - Pate told BikeRadar that this reaction from cyclists was much more enthusiastic than expected: "We are positioning the ElliptiGO to appeal to general fitness enthusiasts and especially current or former runners. Our initial results were that hardcore cyclists wouldn't be interested."

"My co-founder (Brent Teal) i are former Ironman triathletes, so we've spent 1000s of miles inside the saddle on road and tri bikes and also done a lot of biking. We belief that cyclists would treat an ElliptiGO rider like they certainly a recumbent-rider - either ignore him or come up with a snide comment. To surprise, the majority of cyclists are actually really receptive for the idea. We've learned that the more difficult the ride/event we have been on, the greater supportive cyclists are. Regarding our customers, up to now about half describe themselves as 'general fitness enthusiasts', about a quarter describe themselves as runners as well as the other quarter as cyclists."

Pate stressed what he sensed were the advantages of the ElliptiGO after completing the wedding: "Other cyclists begin to see the size of the bike cheap there isn't any seat and so they conclude who's must be far more hard to climb on than their 16-pound Roubaix or Madone. The reality is, the ElliptiGO is heavy, but it climbs rather well as well as the lack of a seat implies that 6 or 7 hours into the ride your body is still really comfortable and pain free. At the end of the ride we were much less 'beat up' when compared to a conventional cyclist is and way better off than someone that went running for long enough to find the same exercise benefits."

He or she also sees widespread commuter / urban appeal for your seatless machine, if they is effective in reducing the market price, stressing three major advantages over conventional bikes:

The rider is much better in a position to look at his surroundings due to the fact his distinct sight is nearly never blocked by cars or other objects. As an end result, he is more likely to visit a potential hazard earlier and thus have an overabundance of time for it to cure it. This gives such a improved a sense security on urban roads for the reason that rider feels more accountable for his environment and more empowered. Plus, there are not many better feelings than looking upon the motive force of the Hummer when pulling up to and including stoplight. The upright riding position also helps to make the rider now more visible to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, which makes it not as likely that they'll hit him. As a result of configuration in the pedaling system and insufficient a seat, the ElliptiGO is more effective for folks wearing non-cycling attire. The lack of a seat means that there is absolutely no wet seat to sit down on and it means that women can wear skirts or dresses with out them get all bunched up or exposing by themselves to the world. We didn't realise which was a difficulty, but we've had many women mention it. Also, since the chain no longer has enough the way in which and there's no structural member over the plane in the pedaling motion, you'll find nothing there to soil suits or jeans.

Elliptical bikes are great for exercise of all ages, my elliptigo review has some good points so make sure you do check it out. Although, elliptigo's are commonly pricey at the moment, but should come down soon!
