Riots are not a new thing. Many nations of the world have experienced their share of riots. The only difference may be the reason for the rioting. The United States saw riots in the Los Angeles area back in the early 1990’s. The reason for those riots was the beating of Rodney King. More recently, we saw protests leading to riots in Greece, because the government had enforced huge cuts in spending while raising taxes. Just a few weeks ago, we saw riots break out in London. These riots were the after effects of a police shooting which left one man dead. The circumstances of the shooting are still up for questioning, and parties from both sides still hold on tight to their own opinions. The riots left many people dead, and caused millions of dollars of damage. Recent reports have shown that hundreds of people were injured in the riots. These injuries were caused by people defending their property and also rioters who were hurt via interactions with police. One device that proved to be very useful throughout the London riots was the pulse oximeter. A pulse oximeter, also known as a pulse ox, is a medical device used to measure the blood oxygen saturation and pulse rate of an individual. An oximeter has been around for many years, but only recently has been adapted for home care use. This is due to the fact that a finger oximeter has shrunk in size and in cost. A modern pulse oximeter can easily be carried in one’s pocket, and provides vital readings within seconds. During the riots, medical professionals used a pulse oximeter on various injured rioters. It proved to be a life saver, because it allowed the emergency responders to take accurate and fast readings of people’s oxygen levels. These readings made it very easy for emergency responders to determine if the injured required supplemental oxygen, or were suffering from any other respiratory related injuries. Amazon.com reported that when the riots were occurring, the sale of bats and other items that could be used in the riots were up almost 6000%. Amazon also reported that sales of pulse oximeters were also up 300%. It can be assumed that when riots saw emergency responders use a pulse oximeter on site, they went ahead and purchased one for themselves once they figured out how they were beneficial to them.
