Cloud Computing is a system in which programs and applications are accessed and used through an internet connection. This software can be hosted by different servers located in different areas. With this software, the user is not aware of where it is located but can access it any time if he/she has the licence. It has been employed by many companies and organisations which allow its workers to access the software from anywhere as long as they have internet connectivity. Some of the defining points of cloud computing includes: 1. Cloud computing is a marketing term. Many people tend to assume that this term is an architectural idea, but logically it is a marketing term just like eBusiness and Web services. This term for a long time has been a business term and now with IT coming into play its cost is going down. 2. Cloud computing is not Software as a service. Most people have always equated these two terms making them feel like they are the same. Software as a service is out-hosted software that can be accessed directly. 3. Cloud computing is not a copy of Google. Many people have tended to argue that the technology behind cloud computing is the same as that of Google. The main aim of Google is to build a large mass of data to back up its business. Google involved the use of computer servers and switches to get data. This is a different operation from cloud computing since with this one you need to buy a licence before you access it. 4. Cloud Computing involves technology stacks. With this system, software will be used to offer same services to the web sites that they host by using a given technology stack. The common stack used is the Linux Apache and MySQL stack. This makes the management of this data easy and simple. 5. Cloud Computing involves utilisation of scales. This software is designed based on a given graph. It is hosted by many sources that are different from an IT system. Within a cloud, there is a scale. This means you can have large data and small data. The scale is what determines the prices that the customers will pay before accessing this software. 6. Cloud Computing is not outsourcing but rather operates on a platform of mixed data. With this operating mode, it means you cannot transfer the whole data centre into the internet for customers to access it. 7. Many people have always wondered if there is standard cloud computing. There is nothing of that sort at the moment. The whole process is based on servers that employ virtualisation technology to deliver data for usage to clients. There is only an open standard of this software. 8. It is also good to know that there is nothing like internal cloud, but rather what exists are domains within the server that are built on cloud technology. 9. Cloud Computing doesn’t have any relation with web 2.0. Nevertheless, if you have the skills you can do the connection because web 2.0, which is very compatible with many servers including those of websites. 10. Cloud computing offers guaranteed service levels.
