Ever heard of sewer snakes? No, not the kind that slither around inside the city sewer lines. Sewer snakes are made of high tension heavy-duty steel that is coiled into a long cable and made to run down drain pipes to clean out clogs. Known also by names such as roto-rooters, sewer augers, or drain snakes, sewer snakes are available in many different sizes and shapes. Some sewer snakes are available as manual-operation models, but most of the models used for big jobs are motorized with either electricity or gasoline-powered motors that rotate the metal cable and allow the sewer snakes cables and cutting heads to cut through clogs in a snap. There are many different heads and attachments for sewer snakes designed for different drain cleaning jobs. Root cutting tips are designed to cut through tree roots, coiled tips to drill into the foreign object so that it can be pulled out, and boring tips that create a hole right through the middle of the clog to clear the pipes. Consult a sewer snakes instruction manual for details on which tip to use, or talk to your plumber or home improvement store associate for help deciding. Sewer snakes used for most household jobs are medium-duty models with cables between 25 to 75 feet long. These are designed to cut through most tough clogs including small roots, foreign objects, grease, and hair. Sewer snakes come with interchangeable cutting heads to attack various types of clogs. Some people like to use more than one cutter head at the same time to give sewer snakes even more clearing power. The biggest sewer snakes have cables that are one inch in diameter and can reach clogs as far away as 100 feet or more into the sewer line. These are most often used by professionals as the average home owner doesn't often want to make this large of an investment unless they have a continuing problem with tree roots clogging their sewer main line. These sewer snakes are heavy-duty and will cut through the toughest roots and clog build-ups. Using sewer snakes on your sewer main line will save you thousands of dollars compared to having to dig up and replace all of your sewer lines. Toilet sewer snakes are much smaller, with 3/8 inch diameter cables that are only 4-6 feet long, but sufficient for removing anything near the toilet bowl. Usually these sewer snakes are manually operated and will clear clogs in the p-trap, which is the bend in the pipe under the toilet. Look for toilet sewer snakes with strong but flexible cables that can go past the p-trap for the clogs which are further down the line. Shower drain snakes are very thin, only 1/4 inch diameter, and are 10 to 30 feet long. These sewer snakes take care of clogs due to hair build-up in the drain and can also be used on sinks. Whatever your sewer snakes needs are, if you shop around online, you are sure to find the right tool for the job at hand. If your clog is beyond the capability of your machine, call your local home improvement store to find out about rental rates of a more powerful model, or call a professional to get your lines cleared and flowing today.
