There are many different types of sewer snakes available on the market today. From small home models, to large industrial models, from hand-powered, to electric, to gas, you are sure to find a variety of sewer snakes to meet your many drain-clearing needs. The first group of sewer snakes are the hand-powered models. These easy-to use tools clear sinks and drains smoothly and easily with only the power you supply. Telescoping sewer snakes look like a fishing rod with a crank on the end, and they work where plungers have failed. They have flexible cable with spring wire that resists kinking, but can bend enough to get through a toilet. Telescoping sewer snakes can be purchased in several different lengths from 3ft to 6ft, depending on how far down your clog is located. Look for models with a vinyl guard that will protect against ceramic scratches and chipping. Hand-powered sewer snakes for longer pipes are available in a hand-crank model with a cage that holds cables from 50 to 100 feet long. Look for a comfortable handle to make cranking easier on your hands, a self-aligning bearing system and a convenient carrying handle to make it easier to move from place to place. The can be rented from most home improvement stores and are a good option if you are trying to save money on your rental costs. Electric-powered sewer snakes are also available in hand-held models for small pipe lines. They are a great option for opening clogged sinks, bathroom drains, or roof downspouts. These sewer snakes can be hooked onto a power drill or some sport their own power source. When you hit the clog, simply switch it into reverse to pull the clogging substance out of the pipe. Compact floor model sewer snakes are ideal for longer jobs and cramped spaces. These sewer snakes offer variable speeds, a foot control, and possibly a guide hose that keeps dirty slime and bacteria inside the hose instead of all over your floor. The guide hose will also eliminate cable whipping which can happen when the spring-loaded cable of open sewer snakes is rotated at high speeds. Some sewer snakes are mounted onto a dolly for easy transport, others have gas-powered motors which are perfect for out-of-the-way areas. Be careful not to turn gas-powered motor sewer snakes on their side or the oil will leak onto the carburetor and cause black smoke to billow out. If this happens, simply let it burn off before proceeding. The more powerful sewer snakes offer auto-fed cables that can drive and retract at speeds of 20 feet per minute or more. These are great for bigger and longer drain lines. Super-tough root-cutting sewer snakes are some of the most powerful sewer snakes available, and are usually used by professionals for commercial jobs. These are more expensive, so unless you have frequent root issues, you will likely want to hire a professional when you need sewer snakes at this power level. Whatever your sewer snakes needs, you can find a tool to meet your budget and your drain needs. Do some research and shop around and you'll be sure to find the right sewer snake for the job at hand.
