Facebook and other social networks are believed to encourage narcissism, depression and alcohol abuse according to a number of psychologists. According to the New York Times Larry Rosen, a psychologist at Cal State Dominguez Hills, introduced a conference paper indicating that social medial like Facebook can cause serious ailments in people (My Fox, 2011). One of the major ailments is narcissism. A survey at over 100 colleges has found a connection between narcissism and Facebook (Mahmoud, 2011). The content of the pages helped make narcissists more easily noticeable. Facebook offers a medium where narcissism is reward with additional attention and shallow contacts. The study indicates that men use their about me, pictures, and posts to show their wit. Women who have a narcissistic personality use their pictures to attract additional men. However, these are not your standard pictures or comments but they are focused almost exclusively for getting others attention. Most of us have seen self-promoters on Facebook. We have also been socially snubbed a few times. Narcissism is one of the reasons why very rude behavior often abounds on such social media outlets. Facebook appears to give a great platform for rewarding such behavior and encouraging further self gratification.
