How to clean bathroom taps

Travel & Tourism
Keeping a bathroom clean constantly may feel like a neverending battle to those who are continuously scrubbing their taps to make them look as good as the day they were first installed in the washroom, but there are some little tricks that can help you keep on top of this particular job.

Toothpaste and toothbrushes may not be everyone's first port of call when it comes time to give the bathroom a scrub, but they might be pleasantly surprised with the results if they give such tools a go.

Those with chrome taps might want to try rubbing a bit of toothpaste into any dirty spots on the hardware and then rinsing it off, although they should bear in mind that toothpaste is a little abrasive and could lead to a couple of scratches on the metal if they are not careful as they go.

Keeping an old toothbrush with cleaning supplies might also prove particularly useful, as these can be great at reaching muck caught in any tricky nooks and crannies.

Another way to keep this hardware looking sparkly and beautiful is to combine a bit of white vinegar with some sugar and then use this to polish up the metal.

Vinegar used just on its own will also help scrub these fixtures up, but people should avoid using salt as it is abrasive and will result in scratched taps.

If trying to remove water stains, then lemon juice might be the perfect choice. Steering clear of chemical cleansers in general might also be advisable, as these can be harmful to the environment in the long run.

By using shampoo or shower gel to give fixtures a new lease of life, no potentially dangerous substances or residue will be left on the porcelain or metal - which will also end up smelling lovely into the bargain.

If taps are chrome, then using surgical spirits could prove particularly beneficial, making faucets especially shiny.

Since they contain solvents, they are able to cut right through dirt like greasy fingerprints with ease, although people should exercise caution when using such products as they are flammable.

Alternatively, using cola to keep taps looking good could be a great move, as it is renowned for its ability to remove dirt - give it a go on any limescale around stainless steel taps and sinks.

Another method of cleaning chrome is to rub the metal with flour. Once done, rinse it off and polish the taps with a soft cloth. Keep stainless steel sinks looking just as good by buffing gently with a ball of newspaper or some baking powder. A soft cloth and a bit of liquid soap could also help clean chrome.

Brass or bronze taps could be spruced up nicely with a mixture of white vinegar and salt - half a cup to half a teaspoon respectively - with a bit of added flour to make a paste.

Apply this in a thick layer and leave for 30 minutes before giving the faucets a rinse.

Many of these methods of cleaning bathroom taps could be of particular interest to homeowners with an environmental conscience who do not want to have too much of an impact on the earth.

As such, avoiding chemical cleansers in favour of measures like white vinegar and salt could prove to be the best way to keep fixtures clean.

Tips to keep bathroom taps clean are always handy - but if you're looking to replace your old ones with shiny new fixtures, you can find Ideal Standard taps and other ranges at Bathrooms365. Choose from a host of top brands, including Grohe taps.
