The American Museum of Natural History is one of the largest and most impressive institutions of its kind in the world. Based in New York, it is renowned for the depth and quality of its exhibits and is a must-see attraction if you are visiting the city with your students on a school trip. Located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, the museum has more than 32 million specimens, with 46 permanent exhibitions and 26 interconnected buildings making up the extensive complex. Due to the sheer size of the collection, visitors may find any one of a number of presentations on show when they visit, although there are some displays that are available all year round. One of these is the Milstein Hall of Marine Life, which houses one of the museum's most famous attractions - a 94 ft-long real-size replica of a blue whale. This truly jaw-dropping exhibit will no doubt astound you but there is plenty more here to enjoy, including dioramas, presentations on marine ecosystems and information on some of the ocean's most interesting creatures. If this hasn't quenched your thirst for geological knowledge, you can visit the Gottesman Hall of Planet Earth, which has an extensive catalogue of fascinating information about a range of natural phenomena. This includes how the Earth's atmosphere was formed, a look at the planet's 4.5 billion-year history and how oceans and volcanoes evolved. There are also several features that detail current-day issues such as climate change and an earthquake monitoring station. The Hall of Human Origins is a particularly popular permanent feature, with the exhibits detailing the history of homo sapiens and their ancestors. Visitors can explore the fascinating link between humans, chimpanzees, Neanderthals and other species to examine both the similarities and the differences shown throughout their separate timelines. People can also view a number of displays including detailed explanations of DNA, a selection of fossils and dioramas of early hominids. No trip to the American Museum of Natural History would be complete without walking through the fossil halls, including its famous dinosaur rooms. The institution possesses more than one million fossils, but only has the capacity to show around 600 at any one time. Rather than displaying these ancient wonders in chronological order, the museum has taken the innovative approach of linking them by evolutionary relationships. This is supposed to encourage guests to explore the complex nature of biological development between the world's numerous species.
