How intraocular lens implants can improve life over 50

Health
Options abound for ageing adults. One can start a new career or business, make new friends, renew old relationships, start new hobbies and learn new things, travel, and keep up with the latest technologies. Poor vision does not have to interfere with all these opportunities. Today, various refractive surgical procedures are available. Choosing the right type depends on the needs of the patient. For adults over the age of 50, intraocular lens implants are a practical choice. The usual refractive surgical procedure is laser eye surgery to correct short sightedness, long sightedness, or astigmatism. However, not all people are suitable candidates for this popular treatment method. Laser eye surgery may not be appropriate for people with very thin corneas. People with very high degrees of refractive errors are also not ideal candidates for the procedure. Those who are 50 years old and above are also better off having a lens implant rather than laser vision correction. Having the lens changed seems the more sensible choice because this not only corrects the blurry vision caused by short sightedness or long sightedness but it also prevents cataracts from developing in the future. Cataracts are frequently found in older people, where vision is affected because of a clouding of the lens of the eye. By the age of 40, the natural lens of the eye start to develop clumps of protein that progressively spread out over the front of the eye. The blurriness may not be noticeable at first but later on, this considerably blocks the visual area. Brighter lighting and new prescription glasses can compensate for the blurriness in the initial stages but later on, cataract surgery will still be needed. For people who have had lens implant early on to correct short sightedness or long sightedness, the good news is that the synthetic intraocular lens will never form cataracts. There is no need to worry about developing cataracts or needing cataract surgery in the later years. Visual impairment has been a significant factor in the risk of falls. In older people with poor vision that can be fixed through refractive surgery, having lens implant for vision correction significantly reduces the risk of falls and improves overall safety. In older people, failing vision is one of the primary reasons for feelings of isolation. Clear vision makes it possible to join community groups without the fear of not being able to play a part in activities. Confidence is restored and relationships are fostered. In many cases, poor vision is a major cause of depression. With appropriate vision correction such as lens replacement, favorite games, hobbies, reading, knitting, or watching television can be fully enjoyed. There is a renewed sense of independence since one is also able to do simple everyday tasks such as cooking, gardening, and even driving. For a lot of patients, successful intraocular lens implants can entirely eliminate the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses. In some cases, glasses would only be needed during certain activities, making it possible to enjoy glass free vision for most of the day. Being free from bulky corrective eyewear can also make a person feel younger since glasses typically make a person look older. The use of contact lens implants are also an option. These are artificial lenses that are placed over the natural lens of the eye to improve vision. Lens replacement surgery, on the other hand is especially useful for high degrees of myopia or short sightedness wherein the natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens or IOL. This can be done instead of LASIK which is pretty much limited and cannot be used for those with high refractive errors. People with very thin corneas who are not suitable candidates for laser eye surgery can have lens replacement surgery or refractive lens exchange instead. Adults with the beginnings of presbyopia or blurred vision due to ageing can choose this procedure as an alternative to laser. Furthermore, there will be no risk of developing eye cataracts in the future, making cataract surgery in the later years unnecessary.
