There are lots of places to enjoy a walking break in the UK, but few are as good as the Peak District National Park. The area is one of the most beautiful in the country and you can look forward to views over rugged hillsides and stunning river valleys during your time here. It also benefits from more than 1,800 miles of footpaths with rights of way for the public, so the choice of routes for hiking is huge. Many people associate it with challenging long-distance walks, such as the 268-mile Pennine Way, but book holiday homes in the Peak District for your next break and you will discover there is much more variety. Whether you are looking to spend a couple of hours strolling along a river bank or a day hiking over the hills, you are sure to find a selection of paths suitable for someone of your ability and experience. And if you are staying in self catering accommodation, you will probably appreciate the selection of fine village pubs serving traditional food and local beers that seem to mark the end point of many of the most popular walks. It doesn't really matter where you choose for a base within the Peak District National Park, as the amount of open access land means you are sure to be close to some paths through beautiful surroundings. Many walkers like to be within easy travelling distance of Kinder Scout, which is the highest point in the area. It is well worth climbing up on to the 2,087 ft plateau to enjoy the views and see the Kinder Downfall waterfall, but there are also plenty of gentle routes in the area that will take you through some stunning countryside. The village of Tideswell is a great location for a holiday cottage in the Peak District - and not just because it is home to the excellent George Hotel pub. It is also the start and finish point for the nine-mile Tideswell Walk, which is one of the most scenic routes in the area and takes in attractions such as Cressbrook Mill, as well as the beautiful Miller's Dale. Chinley is another good choice, as there are lots of good walks starting from the village, including the circular path through deserted quarries and picturesque farmland up to South Head. The hike over the hills and along the Pennine Bridleway to the famous Old Nag's Head pub in Edale is another popular route. And if you don't want to walk nine miles each way, you can always get the train back to your holiday home in Chinley.
