Croatia's Adriatic coast is a great place to visit while on a Mediterranean cruise, with some of the country's most beautiful locations being situated by the sea, including Split and Dubrovnik. Famous for being described by Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw as "paradise on Earth", Dubrovnik is a must-see destination for anyone travelling in the region. A UNESCO World Heritage Site for more than 30 years, the city is probably most famous for its impressive defensive walls. Built in the ninth century, the walls are approximately 1,940 metres long and reach as high as 25 metres. They are considered some of the most effective military structures from the Middle Ages, having never been breached during that time. Another architectural wonder in the city is Sponza Palace. Constructed by Paskoje Milicevic Mihov, the structure survived the 1667 earthquake and has served a number of purposes over the years, including as the place where the former Dubrovnik Republic minted its money. Now it is a memorial museum set up to honour those who died during the Croatian War of Independence between 1991 and 1995. However, those keen to top up their tan during their stay in Dubrovnik will be pleased to learn there are a wide selection of great beaches, the most popular of which is Banje Beach. A well-known hotspot for sportsmen and other celebrities staying in the city, the seaside location has a number of high-end features, including its own reception, a restaurant and a cafe bar. The beach is also a fantastic place to get a stunning view of Dubrovnik's Old Town. Anyone cruising along the Adriatic coast should also spend time in Split. The second-largest city in Croatia, it is one of the oldest settlements in Europe with many historians claiming it dates back 1,700 years or more. History buffs can learn about this extensive background at Split Town Museum, which has weapons, coins, drawings and documents outlining the city's history. Keen to know more? Split's Archaeological Museum showcases a number of artefacts from the Roman and early Christian periods. For those of you looking for something a little more modern, Split is a fantastic place to visit, especially for festival-goers. Throughout the year, the city holds different events, with the Split Summer Festival being the highlight of the calendar. Attendees are treated to a range of concerts, plays and ballets during the months of July and August to keep them entertained, while a film festival is presented the following month.
