Edinburgh hosts many of the world’s largest and most famous festivals including the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the extravagant Hogmanay Street Party, as well as the Edinburgh International Festival. The Edinburgh International Science Festival which began in 1989 is the world’s first science festival and continues to be the largest science festival in Europe. The festival occurs annually every spring and attracts hundreds of eager scientists wishing to share their knowledge in a fun packed programme of interactive activities, workshops and demonstrations. The festival is enjoyed by families and people of all ages around the world. Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival is the country’s longest running jazz festival and takes place every summer. The world’s largest arts festival takes place in Edinburgh and is known as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The festival occurs for four weeks throughout August and hosts a diverse range of performances including Theatre, Comedy, Dance and Music. The Fringe hosts over 32,000 performances each year, taking place in over 250 venues all over Edinburgh. The Edinburgh International Festival takes place in August over a three week period and attracts a number of the world’s best performers of music, theatre, opera and dance. There are also a range of interactive activities to participate in with an assortment of workshops, talks and exhibitions. The event attracts thousands of visitors to the city every year. Another large event which takes place in Scotland’s capital is The Edinburgh International Book Festival which is held in Charlotte Square Gardens in the city centre. The festival is the largest of its kind in the world and attracts approximately 750 authors as well as children’s illustrators, scientists and novelists from over 40 countries around the world. The festival hosts a packed programme of exciting activities from book signings, to political debates and children’s activities. Edinburgh is also host to the spectacular Hogmanay Celebrations with over 100,000 people attending the Hogmanay Street Party. The mesmerising event consists of five live music stages as well as well as an extravagant firework display and a headlining concert taking place in Princes Street Gardens.
