Manchester boasts a number of architectural styles throughout the city including the gothic style which is found predominantly around the Manchester City Centre area. These gothic style buildings include Manchester’s Town Hall, St Mary’s Cathedral, John Ryland Library and Manchester Museum to name but a few. Manchester Town Hall is situated in the heart of Manchester City Centre bordered by Albert Square to the front and St Peter’s Square to the back. This gothic style Town Hall is one of the best single monuments in the UK. The building features murals by artist Ford Madox Brown as well as a sculpture of Sir John Barbirolli and a beautiful ceiling situated in the Great Hall. The Town Hall is a complex consisting of the original old town hall building and a new town hall extension. The John Ryland Library is another famous landmark in Manchester and is located in the Deansgate area of Manchester City Centre. It is an exquisite late Victorian gothic style building and is home to one of the most magnificent collections of printed works and manuscripts in the world. Amongst these treasures you will find the first edition Shakespeare Sonnets and also the oldest section of the New Testament. Manchester Cathedral can be found on Victoria Street in Manchester City Centre. This medieval Perpendicular Gothic Style Church was extended and restored throughout the centuries. The most recent restoration work was conducted due to the bombings which occurred during WW2. The official name of the cathedral is The Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George in Manchester, although it is commonly shortened to St Mary’s. The Manchester Museum is situated to the south of Manchester City Centre on Oxford Street and is one of The University of Manchester’s many gothic styled buildings. The museum is host to over six million items from every continent of the world.
