Polo shirts and khaki pants have been the norm for the past 20 years. The world is changing and so are the businesses that are sponsoring global expansion. The time has come for a more formal way of approaching the world around us. The international culture is much more formal then we are in the United States and we should take notice. The fast food, sports driven, and t-shirt wearing culture of the United States doesn’t fit everywhere. How we dress is how we perceive ourselves in the world around us. If we are wearing shiny shoes and a suit we command much more respect in both the business world and in our communities then we would if we were in a polo and casual pants. People naturally assume when we are dressed professionally people will assume that you have achieved a level of status. That status goes a long way when people talk to you. There is also a psychological factor associated with professional clothing that doesn’t come with business casual attire. Sharp clothing helps us to feel smart and professional. The way we approach our work tasks can be affected by how we are currently feeling about ourselves. If we feel competent we will then act competent. That competence filters all the way through the product we produce, the reports we write and the way we conduct ourselves. The business casual environment was pushed by the technology industry. The young technology stares threw off the stuffy atmosphere of corporate America. Techies were expected to be smart, geeky, computer savvy and egalitarian by nature. When people are egalitarian they don’t like to wear suits. When dealing with other international companies and people the business casual approach doesn’t impress upon other cultures the respect and business suaveness of the average American professional. If they are in suits and we are in clothing that is more appropriate for going to your local fun park there is a good chance the person with the suit will have the upper hand. In a declining national economy that is under pressure by globalization any benefit is worth considering. Wearing suits and professional clothing is a benefit even if it is in the psychological sphere. The more leverage the American professional has the better off they are. This includes looking superb, being diligent and producing a superb product. If we plan on dealing with the traditional cultures of Asia or Europe we should also dress the part.
