Every player is dealt one card at a time till the time they have received their quota of cards. The rest of the cards are used as the stock pile and are put face down. The top card of the stock pile is kept face up to start the discard pile. The objective of the game of rummy is to create a run or a set by melding the cards in their hands and discarding those that they don’t need. The minimum number of cards needed in a run or set is three. An example of a run is 8, 9 and 10 of Hearts. A set consists of three or more cards of the same value but not necessarily of the same suit. An example of set is 3 of Diamonds, 3 of Clubs and 3 of Spades. A player who melds all the cards first is declared the winner. Some games require a player to reach a certain number of points to be declared winner. Aces are woth one point, 10, Jack, Queen and King are all worth 10 points and the other cards are worth their face value. To start the game the first rummy player (clockwise to the left of the dealer) either picks up the card in the discard pile or one from the stock pile. If a card is picked up from the discarded pile it must be immediately used to meld with the other cards. A card picked from the stock pile may be used or discarded. Each player continues this action till the time someone has a complete meld of cards. If the stock pile is finished before anyone has won then all the cards in the discarded pile except the latest one are shuffled and then kept face down to create a new stock pile.
