Getting in shape is a great way to feel like you have more energy, a more positive energy, and a healthier body. No matter where you are in the process of getting in shape, if you persist in doing the little things, you will see results in your energy level and your waistline. If you’re just starting the process of losing weight, toning up, and starting a journey to a healthier lifestyle, here are a few helpful tips for getting started safely and healthily. - Make sure that you keep your calorie count high enough that you have enough fuel for your body. It sounds counterintuitive to lose weight by eating more, but it’s true. If you don’t consume enough calories every single day to keep your body’s natural processes running, you are actually sabotaging your attempts to lose weight and get fit. Depending on your current weight, gender, and level of activity, the bare minimum amount of calories needed per day can change, so see a physician to help you determine the best amount of calories to eat to meet your fitness goals.
- Change up your routine. Cardio exercise is a great way to lose weight and get in a healthier shape, but there are other things that you should be doing for your body, such as weight training. Creating muscle tone improves the look of your body and can also increase your metabolism, as muscle weight burns more calories per pound than fat weight. Start with basic weights and try to add in some type of strength training into your routine two or three times per week.
- It’s ok to start slow! If you haven’t been exercising, starting out by running five miles a day isn’t going to be a realistic goal. If you are starting from a completely sedentary lifestyle, make your goals manageable, doable, and measurable. If you can’t run, start by walking. If you can’t walk far, start by walking to the end of your block and gradually add distance as you feel more comfortable.
- Find a support network. Friends, family, neighbors, coworkers can all be great resources to help you in your fitness goals. If you can find an exercise partner, that’s one of the best ways to make the most of your exercise goals. Studies have shown that people who work out with a partner are more likely to stick to a fitness routine. If you join one of the many fitness centers in your area, find a workout buddy at your local gym.
