One of the most common ways to use wood dowels are in the creation of sturdy wood dowel joints. Often used by furniture companies in the supporting and manufacturing of strong and affordable furniture, joints made from wood dowels are cheap, easy, and much more appealing than some stronger, metal type joints. Using wood dowels to make joints is something easy to do once you understand how and has practiced it a little, but one question many people have is one that can be answered just as easily, what is a dowel joint? Wood dowels are formed into a butt joint made, obviously, from wood dowels. Many consider wood dowels to be just as sturdy as mortise and tenon joint, although when wood dowels are used to construct the joint it is often simpler and cheaper. When keeping costs low is an important factor in the construction of something, wood dowels are often used to make joints rather than other methods of doing so because other methods are often more expensive. However, the most difficult task when using wood dowels to construct a joint is drilling the perfect 90 degree dowel holes in order to successfully create the joint. Creating a joint out of wood dowels can be more appealing, seem to be a bit neater, and can be very strong if an appropriately strengthened glue is used. However, drilling the perfect holes can be a real challenge if you lack experience in similar types of drilling and assembly. But if this joint is constructed properly it can be a successful addition to anything like boxes, carcases, boards, cabinets, and even frames. The wood dowels needed to construct a joint like this often come in two forms; ready-made wood dowels with glue incisions, and dowel rods. Ready-made wood dowels can be purchased in one of several precut sizes, and these dowels have glue incisions to give the dowel more glue area. These ready-made wood dowels are also cut in a way that makes them much easier to insert into holes at either end. Dowel rods are the cheaper route, these rods are simply longer rods that can be cut and shaped to fit the measurements you need. Although wood dowels can be found in two different forms, generally either type can be used, if done correctly, to create a perfect dowel joint. Once you have acquired the right amount of wood dowels you can begin constructing your joint. The dowel joint can be used to support anything from a bookshelf to a homemade chair if constructed properly. Dowel joints are generally much cheaper and much easier to fix and replace than other joints. Keeping costs low is always an added benefit to any project, and saving money can help any situation. Although dowel joints are often underestimated, they can serve the purposes of most of the joint needs in your home. One last thing to remember when considering dowel joints is the type of wood that will be used in the making of the joint. Getting strong and crack resistant wood dowels is essential for making a strong dowel joint.
