Mixed Martial Arts or MMA is a sport that uses full body contact. Two players or fighters use both offensive and defensive techniques. It is a combination of fighting discipline and different martial arts. The sport is said to have originated from Ancient Greece from the known ancient Olympic combat sport of Pankration, that used same concept, then later passed on to the Romans. This sport has garnered quite a big amount of followers over the recent years. It branches out to different organization. Most notable of which are UFC, Strikeforce, Bellator FC and some that has ceased operations like IFL and Elite XC. UFC or the Ultimate Fighting Championship, probably the biggest MMA organization as of today, has produced a lot of strong and talented champions from different fight discipline. Some well known and prominent fighters that usually heard over a lot of MMA news were Silva, Penn, Lidell, Ortiz, Souza and so forth. These fighters are well trained and use different fighting techniques. Most MMA bouts are usually scheduled with three, 5-minute rounds of fighting. Championship bouts usually would have five of these 5-minute round clashing of muscle and mayhem. Victory is achieved by either knocking out your opponent, having them tap out due to submission or winnings by unanimous or split decision. In some MMA organizations, bouts are held in a traditional boxing ring. It's technically a square that can go up to 20x20 feet across. In most of the prominent MMA organizations, MMA fights are held in an octagon shaped cage up to 30x30 feet across. When the sport was starting, fighters were allowed to wear whatever gear they were comfortable in. MMA gearshas evolved over the years. Stricter rules apply to protect the fighters from accidents and injuries. The hands and the head is the most important part of the body that needed greatest protection. Fighters are usually provided with gloves specifically designed for MMA bouts. Padded knuckles with exposed fingers, that are designed to provide maximum movement but reduced occurrence of accidental cuts. Wrist is protected by wrapping around hand-wraps for about 3 inches thick. Some fight provides head gear. The head gear must provide complete visibility. It is usually made with durable foam enclosed in leather.
