A motion picture, or movie, is a series of moving images recorded at multiple frames per second by a film camera. Final cut movies usually premiere in movie theaters and are shown there for a week or two. The concept of cinemas originated from opera houses in which theater actors do live performances in front of audiences. The first widely recognized motion picture ever made is Exiting the Factory by the Lumiere brothers, Auguste and Louis. It was a French silent short documentary film shot in black-and-white at sixteen frames per second. It was only forty six seconds long. Since then, movies have evolved to a great extent. Most films are now full-length features complete with accompanying soundtrack and shot in full color at twenty four frames per second. It is now considered both an art form and a very huge industry with a worldwide following. With the inception of digital filmmaking, which is a lot less expensive than actual film, movies are now much easier to produce. The impact of films on today’s society is very astonishing. During the height of the film industry, before the television came to life, an estimated eighty million people a week went to the cinemas. These days, with television and the Internet allowing people to watch free movie online, that number has drastically dropped. Nevertheless, the strong influences of the film industry stayed the same as always. Whatever we see in current movies is a reflection of our society. What is more embezzling is the question: Which side of the big screen is the actual reflection? Movies are able to dictate what is “in” in today’s society. Be that as it may, movies are here to stay, and they remain loved by millions worldwide. It’s a different world on the silver screen. It’s a break from reality, giving people a sense of happiness, astonishment, and hope.
