Eat Your Way Around the Europe with Expedia

One of the best things about travel is the opportunity to sample the cuisines of different countries. Foodies like me will plan their trips around the best places to eat so throw away that travel guide, hit Expedia to book your flights and hotels, and let me take you on an around Europe feast.

Make your travel arrangements using one of the Expedia Discount Codes at 5hop5.ie and you’ll have even more money to spend on tickling your well-travelled tastebuds. Are you ready for the best virtual meal of your life?

Steak Frites in Paris

Ah, gay Paree! The capital of the self-proclaimed food capital of the world. Before my trip I sought out some of the most revered restaurants in the city of lights, not wanting to miss out on any opportunity to treat my tastebuds Paris style.

However, much to my surprise the meal that maketh my trip was one which I stumbled upon quite by accident. En route to the fancy restaurant that I had booked months in advance, my husband and I got horribly lost.

Finding ourselves in a maze of alleyways in the biting December cold (and all dressed up in heels for dinner – me, not him) we eventually gave up on the fancy French dining that awaited us and stumbled into the nearest warm bistro we could find.

Bistrot Vivienne was crammed to the rafters, which may appear to be an inconvenience but is actually always a good sign. Triply so if the customers crowded around the wooden tables are speaking the cities language, as they were in this cosy little café.

It was here, at 4 Rue des Petits Champs, Paris, crammed at a table with another couple and their young baby, that I discovered what steak frites should taste like. This was in 2005, and no other version of this dish has come close since.

Apple Pie in Amsterdam

Amsterdam really surprised me with its food. I found the deserts especially to be delicious, but unfortunately I wasn’t taken with the pancakes that it so prides itself on.

Among other calorific delights I sampled were a melt in the mouth chocolate mousse (quaintly presented in a jam jar) at Seasons, and divine scones with the most extra-ordinary homemade lemon curd at Das Bakkerswinkel. However, for me, Amsterdam is all about the apple pie.

‘Winkel pie,’ as it’s known, is genius mix of apples and cinnamon, encased in thick, buttery pastry, best served with a squirt of cream and a latte on the side. If you think you know apple pie, think again. This slice of heaven from the Winkel Café, overlooking the Noordermarkt, will blow Grandma’s right out of the water.

Pasta in Roma

Before I even arrived in Rome I knew I was in trouble. The fabled land of pizza, pasta and ice-cream called to me like a whispering temptress and I knew I was powerless to resist its bountiful offerings.

So, where to start? Well the sheer variety of ice-cream available in your regular Italian gelato parlour is staggering. Every possible flavour is laid out in a tantalising display of colour and texture, from the familiar (vanilla), to the typically Italian (Stracciatella – chocolate flakes), to the surprising (Milky Way anyone?), to the virtuous (mango sorbet).

However, while the ice-cream was a pleasant treat while admiring the Trevi Fountain, I’m not still dreaming of it years later.

The pizza in Rome is a way of life. Huge, thin pizzas the size of dustbin lids are made for sharing (or not), and what better to choose for an inexpensive meal out than a giant pizza for two?

In Rome, you’ll find rossa (with tomato sauce) or bianca (without), you’ll find slices of pizza to walk with and huge folded calzone pizzas. Above all Roman pizzas should be cooked in a traditional wood burning pizza oven – while there, don’t even consider accepting anything less.

However, when it came down to it, I was surprised to find that my perfect Rome food moment came in the form of the simplest pasta dish around – Pasta Bianco. Simply tagliatelli pasta with a sprinkling of parmesan and black pepper, it was a melt in the mouth, flavoursome example of stripped back Italian cooking at its best – and I found it at Il Chianti, around the corner from the bustling Trevi Fountain.

Wherever you are planning on going on your next trip, be sure to use one of the Expedia Voucher Codes from 5hop5 to save on your travel expenses. The more you save on the necessities the more you can spend on enjoying the gastronomic delights of your chosen destination – Bon Appetite!
