While engineering is the life blood of innovation that keeps a company’s products up to date and creates the new products that beat the competition, many companies have been shedding their engineering staff to focus on what they believe are core competencies of manufacturing or data management. Where does that leave technical recruitment in an era of a highly mobile work force? 1. Hire those engineers the competition has just shed. They will appreciate being wanted and provide both fresh insight and high loyalty. 2. Retirement is often the only choice for those near the end of a career and wishing something other than unemployment. In professional networking events, look for those who have officially retired but are not yet too old to work. These individuals will range from their early fifties to mid-sixties. Heavy with experience but often desperate for employment, technical recruiters can bring in this talent on a full time, part time or consulting basis at far less than it would cost to hire them directly from the full time market. 3. Outsourcing is the process of hiring others to do the work that was previously done in house. Outsourcing has historically meant hiring cheaper labor overseas. Yet the internet allows for cheaper outsourcing without going out of the country. Look for the former manufacturing powerhouses in your region that have typically had strong engineering programs or technical training networks. Setting up a design office or technical lab there would be far cheaper than adding talent in the high cost city. 4. Small businesses are often formed by those who have been laid off from a larger business. When looking for technical outsourcing opportunities or prime talent to recruit, seek out the start-ups of downsized technical staff. 5. It has been said that those who cannot do, teach. Yet many technical and engineering experts have gone into teaching in order to remain employed. When going to colleges to recruit, do not just look at the new graduates. Look at the new professors, adjunct professors, and teaching assistants. They may have ten to twenty years of experience in the field and started at the bottom of the technical teaching arena. They will also come back to their profession again if offered more than the teaching salary they currently receive. 6. The space program led to a boom in science, technology, engineering and math education in a race to create the technical skill set to fuel an explosion of space exploration. NASA’s shut downs create a flood of aerospace, engineering, and scientific talent for those firms recruiting in these areas. Claire Jarrett is writing on behave of Mane. Mane is one of the UK's leading technical recruitment consultancies and is a specialist engineering agency. They also offer Find Engineering jobs online and Find Technical Jobs online
