While many industries in the United States are experiencing a downturn in employment, the medical field is in desperate need of health professionals such as radiologic technology positions, Although it was reported by the New York Times that the overall United States employment fell by more than one million jobs in the year 2001, the health care industry was adding 200,000 jobs. Health care is also reported as the single strongest sector in the economy. For those people who work in the medical field, this growing market is very good news. But, this news is not so good for employers who are having major problems trying to find qualified health professionals. Although hundreds of thousands nuclear medicine technologists, sonographers, radiation therapists, radiographers, and nuclear medicine technologists work in the United States today, many thousands more are required to keep up with and maintain the growing demand for their services. Therefore, here are several strategies that can be used to recruit more people into the field of radiologic technology. Many of these strategies have been based on the successful recruitment efforts of other professions within other industries. The list does not consist of any of the traditional recruitment tools that were tested by different managers over the years, such as offering great benefit packages, higher salaries, as well as providing additional advancement opportunities. However, it does focus on ideas that have worked very well and were effective with other employers in different industries. These strategies include grow your own, work closely with programs in education, recruit former employees, promote the medical facility and the city, include salary information the ads. For example, “grow your own” programs have been used to recruit and develop tomorrow teachers. These careers can be decided in the students middle schools or high school years, Another effective strategy is to recruit former employees. For those employees that the organization did not want to lose earlier in their careers, these employees will often make excellent candidates for present job advancement opportunities. Good employees are even more valuable when they are hired the second time. Therefore, when high performers exit the company, make sure the offer is made and extended to keep in touch for future career opportunities and promotional job positions. Recruiting candidates from other industries is also another viable option or strategy. People who lost their jobs in the computer industry, airline or tourism area may want to explore the medical field as a second career. With job fairs in the community combined with different medical education programs the medical field may be another area of interest. Claire Jarrett is writing on behave of Ashley Associates.
