Skiing and snowboarding are skill sports that many like to try when they are on a winter holiday. Sometimes the confusion of which one to try haunts us if we are not too sure of what they are all about. Well, if one is an experienced skier, he/she should be able to have a go at snowboarding and vice-versa. The one similarity between skiing and snowboarding is that both these sports take the sportsman down a hill at a rapid pace. Skiing allows the person involved to stand upright, whereas snowboarding requires that the person be seated while they are stationary. One can snowboard on softer ice, but skis are better when the ice is hard and strong. Skiing can be done at greater speeds than snowboarding. For an experienced skier, snowboarding is easier to learn than a novice. However, some basic lessons on snowboarding are always required. The concepts of edging and carving are similar in both the sports. However, an experienced skier always opines that he/she progressed much faster with the snowboarding lessons in the initial stages. Lessons up to the intermediate stage in snowboarding are easy, but as with any other sport, it requires tremendous amount of practice and persistence to come out as an expert. Skiing is more taxing on the knees than snowboarding. Knees injuries are more common in the former. The snowboarding efforts can, however, leave the novice with a sore back. Snowboarding was actually conceived by Sherman Poppen who conceived the idea of riding a single board down the slopes. Actually he created the 'Snurfer' which was a board of plywood to which a leash was attached to the front. Many snurfers were mass produced in the 60s and 70s and this later progressed into the modern form of snowboards. In the earlier days, skiing was an expensive sport, taken on by wealthy people. Snowboarding became more popular in the late 70s after snowboards were accepted under ski liability insurance. Snowboarding then became popular with teenagers who were ready to try all the street skating techniques on the slopes. The skiing techniques were more disciplined and skiers always believed they had more right to the slopes than the snowboarders. Initially, many ski clubs banned snowboarders from their slopes, but now many resorts have opened up to the snowboarders. Nowadays, both disciples co-exist on the slopes in harmony, and it is common for thrill-seekers to partake in both skills. Claire Jarrett is writing on behalf of SnowSkool, who offer snowboard instructor courses and snowboard courses
