Physiotherapy is also referred to as physical therapy. Physiotherapy is a health-care profession that encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of individuals of all ages, with medical conditions due to illnesses or injuries, to enable them to reach their maximum potential. The physiotherapists develop a unique program for each individual, after necessary examination of their medical and physical condition, to enable the patient to perform the functional activities they are capable of, with ease. The treatment techniques chosen were designed to help the afflicted individual improve his/her ability to move various parts of the body and also to improve overall health and fitness. The physiotherapy would also help to reduce pain in various parts of the body and restore functionality of an affected part. The sphere of treatment also includes the emotional well-being of the individual. The physiotherapy program for an individual also involves interaction with the family members of the client for more effective treatment. Modern physiotherapy is dated to have started in the end of the 19th century in Britain and was followed soon after in America. More women were earlier recruited in the field of physiotherapy for the purpose of massage and rehabilitation during the First World War. The actual physiotherapy program would involve exercises, manipulation, interventions, and some education. The program will improve motor skills, balance and co-ordination, strength and endurance, and cognitive and sensory processing capabilities of the affected individual. Physiotherapy forms a part of many specialties including orthopedics, pediatrics and geriatrics, cardiopulmonary, to name a few. Physiotherapists also treat patients with vertigo who have problems with equilibrium and help to alleviate the symptoms. Women’s physical conditions related to child birth, osteoporosis, pelvic pain, etc., can be effectively treated with physiotherapy. Some physical therapy professionals these days function in the specialized area of sports medicine. They treat injuries that happen during practice of a sport and provide acute care as well as take care of the progressive rehabilitation of the sportsman. They also practice in the areas of health policy and health insurance. Here they usually work in an expert advisory role. To become a qualified physical therapist, one has to undergo university-level studies for a minimum of four years. The course should be accredited by a legitimate relevant body that accords full professional recognition for the course. The curriculum would include all areas from screening the patient to examination, evaluation, diagnosis, the plan of physical therapy, the intervention required, and education.
