A heater causes a body to achieve a higher temperature. A heater can also emit heat. A cooler, on the other hand is used to reduce the temperature less than the ambient temperature. There are heaters available to heat solids, liquids, and gases. In a home setting, heaters are appliances that generate heat to keep the interior warm. A central heating system is used to keep the interior of an entire building or a portion of the building warm. Sometimes, it is combined with ventilation and air conditioning as well. In this case it is called an HVAC system. In the central heating system, the heating takes place at one single location in the building. The basic operation here would be the burning of a fossil fuel in a boiler. The heat that is generated is then distributed through ducts to the entire building. The medium of distribution can be forced air, circulating water in pipes, or steam through pipes. Some modern buildings used solar powered heaters, and in this case, the heat is generally distributed with the help of circulating water. Larger buildings typically use steam heating systems. Some modern buildings also come with electric heating systems. Electric heating systems convert electricity directly into heat. It is more expensive than heat produced by combustion of oil or gas. Electric resistance heat is usually provided by radiant heat or wall heaters. A water heating system usually has gas lines, a boiler that heats water, a pump that circulates the water, and radiators, which are usually mounted on the wall, that would radiate the heat into the rooms as the hot water passes through them. Central heating is not considered very energy efficient as there are considerable distribution losses. It may also happen that an isolated unoccupied room may end up being heated. Therefore heating systems are decided based on a case-to-case basis, keeping in mind the function and requirement of heating. If a building needs to be completely heated, it has been found out that combustion heating is far more environmentally friendly than electric air central heating or by using other direct electric heating devices. Manufacturers of modern radiant floor heating, using PTFE cables and mats, claim it is the most comfortable and unmatched by any other heating system. The heating can be controlled on a room-to-room basis. The thermostat settings in the system help to achieve comfort at lower temperatures and the system warms people and objects as opposed to heating the surrounding air. Manufacturers of such systems claim energy savings of 20 – 40% as compared to conventional heating systems.
