The way that people choose to heat their home is always evolving. People have gone from using fireplaces, to coal powered boilers, to natural gas furnaces, and to electric heat. Whether it is from the power of the sun or if a person used some materials from the earth to heat their home, finding a way to be warm is something that most people have to decide upon in their home. There are advantages and disadvantage to the various ways to heat a home and a person must take them into consideration when deciding on a heating system to use. When it comes to using fossil based fuels to heat a furnace, the thing that concerns people is that they are using a limited resource. There is only so much of this product that can be found, and as it gets scarcer, the price rises. At some point the cost of using this type of fuel might make heating a home in this way prohibitive. Another disadvantage of these types of systems is the harm that they do to the environment. Through the release of gases after the fuel is burned, there is damage done to the ozone layer and an increasing problem known as the greenhouse effect. In order to limit this, the world must reduce the emissions that come from fossil fuels. The advantage of these types of systems is their efficiency. They are able to heat the homes relatively quickly and are able to maintain a comfortable temperature at all times. People who use electric heating run into the problem of having to get the electricity. These systems can be very expensive to run. They are not as good at maintaining a home at a consistent and comfortable temperature. They are able to install relatively easy and are not hard or expensive to maintain. If a person does not want to use the electricity from a utility they can add the use of solar power to give electricity to the home. This can make a home more self-sufficient. Some people love the romance of using fire to heat their home. Fireplaces are the least efficient way to keep a home warm and they also give off emissions that are dangerous to the environment. It is difficult to heat a whole home doing this, but it is a great way to warm up a room on a special night if the person desires that. Choosing a heating system for a home is an individual choice. Each person will have different reasons for choosing the system that they do. One of the biggest factors in the choice is what is currently used in the home. The cost of changing can be a roadblock that people cannot overcome. Many people do not have to decide until what they are using completely fails.
