Learning to Scuba Dive doesn't take a long to accomplish, and the best time to learn is now. Do not wait until the last minute before you go on a vacation and then take scuba lessons at a hotel or resort. This type of instruction for tourists is often not as complete as it should be and can lead to problems with safety issues when diving. Although it is true that scuba diving is now safer than it has ever been, the leading causes of accidents are ignorance and carelessness. This latter problem you can deal with yourself, but to protect yourself from ignorance you need to learn scuba diving the proper way from the very beginning. Lessons in how to scuba dive are given by professional instructors, and can be found by contacting your local diving shop. Often times this type of diving shop will have a professional instructor that gives lessons. If not, they will always know who the local instructors are. These instructors will always be affiliated with one of the professional scuba organizations such as the Professional Association of Dive Instructors in North America. Once you sign up for lessons there is a lot of book learning to do. This doesn't have to be done all at once, but once the written material has been digested then a weekend is spent underwater learning the basics that have been covered in the literature. This stage of the teaching is done in a controlled environment such as a swimming pool. After this is completed a weekend is spent underwater in an open area such as the ocean or a lake. One day will be spent diving and reviewing everything that has been learned. The second day is spent on testing the pupil on everything that has been learned. If the instructor is satisfied that you have learned the skills necessary to scuba dive, you will then be given certification. Once you are certified you will be able to rent scuba diving equipment. The entire process doesn't take that long. A few days learning and studying the written material and then two days each for two weekends. It is much better to learn this way so you will be much better prepared if you ever decide to go scuba diving while on vacation. You will enjoy the experience much more and will not get bogged down with a crash course in Scuba diving. And most important of all, you will not be at risk for not knowing or understanding a key component of scuba diving.
