A healthy and nutritious diet is extremely important for every mom-to-be. Pregnancy is a very taxing period for every woman as she has to now consume enough food for herself as well as her baby. The demand for all kinds of nutrients goes up high during this time and hence if you do not take the right diet, you will end up causing harm to both of you.

A diet rich in vitamins and minerals is of utmost importance during this time especially one rich in folic acid and iron. These two minerals are extremely necessary for the proper development of the fetus into a healthy baby. During pregnancy, it is also necessary to take a follow a diet that is high in calories. But this does not mean binging on food all the time; you need to take a well-balanced diet with carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins in the right amount.

Rather than just eating two or three food types, it is best to include food belonging to different groups every day. This ensures a well rounded and balanced diet which provides the right nutrition for the mother as well as the baby. Your daily diet must include both milk and dairy products as the calcium demand in the body goes high. If you are worried of piling on kilos, then take skimmed or low fat milk; also include, cheese, buttermilk and yoghurt at least once in your food every day. But if you are lactose intolerant, then you must speak to your doctor regarding alternate foodstuffs which contain calcium. Along with calcium, these dairy products also provide you with protein and vitamin B12 which are highly beneficial for your health at this time.

Cereals, pulses, nuts and whole grains are another food group that must included in your everyday diet. This is especially beneficial for vegetarians as this food group constitutes the main supply of protein for the body. Include lots of fresh vegetables and fruits in your diet during pregnancy as these contain an armload of minerals, vitamins and fiber. Make sure that you seasonal produce and ensure that these are cleaned thoroughly before consumption. If possible, get organic vegetables and fruits so that you are not taking in traces of fertilizers and other chemicals. Include all kinds of vegetables in your diet like leafy green ones, roots and tubers.

If you are a non-vegetarian, then include meat, poultry and fish also in your daily diet. These are a good source of protein and fish is a very good source of omega -3 fatty acids. It is also important to take lots of fluid during this time as the body tends to get dehydrated easily. Avoid carbonated and packaged drinks as these contain too much sugar; instead, drink purified water or take fresh vegetable and fruit juices. Pregnancy is a very important period in your life and you tend to get emotionally and physically drained at times. Eating the right foods in the right quantities ensure that both you and your baby stay fit and healthy.
